Ramadan 2006.

Tomorrow is the 1st of Ramadan, the Fasting Month. During this month, Muslims are advised to re-examine themselves. Clean their thoughts and their souls. Obey Allah's commands, be faithfull to Islam and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad S.A.W. Do your compulsory ibadah and as many provisional (sunat) as you can manage. Try to resist temptations . Don't 'bad mouth' others you don't agree with. Be understanding with your family and friends and magnanimous with your non-friends. Reach out for the poor and weak, help them if not by means then by ways. Fasting helps you to feel their hunger and weakness. Be kind to each other and to other living creatures and this good earth. Lets not be extravagant when breaking fast and waste food. Eat just enough to sate your hunger and thirst. Eat healthily. Have a good and 'berkat' Ramadan. InshaAllah.

It is the month of ramadhan that brings back images from times of old - people from the past, some gone, some still around. most of all i recall how we celebrated it - for we didnt have much of anything then. yet upon breaking fast, the sarbat tasted sweeter than nectar, the small fried fish tasted better than anything else, and even the dates ( which were rare and not as commercialised) tasted divine.
now berbuka is a selling brand for hotels and restaurants. people talk about the spread of berbuka functions they attend and compare prices etc..
i am glad that for all the commercialisation around us, our family is mindful about moderation. perhaps the only extra thing we have accompanying our meal, is a sweet dish, homemade rather than bought.
i wish people would revolt against commercialising the third pillar of islam..

selamat berpuasa, pak shah. you and your family are always in my prayers.

I believe, just like in the performance of Haj, how good and "berkat" our ramadhan is dependent on whether we are able to continue to practise beyond the divinely aided incentive that Ramadhan offers.

In Ramadhan, people in droves give to the orphanage and poor. Why is it that the feeding stopns after Ramadhan?

All the restraints of Ramadan is lost immediately upon the First aid. For Malays, they become lost in the ritual obligation of vistings that they forget that it is Ramadhan that needs celebrating and not the Syawal. Why can't we make the practise of "ziarah" be beyond just Syawal to all year around?

Our over exuberance in celebrating Syawal has resulted in losing all the good habit and practises of Ramadhan lost by Hari Raya.

We certainly have to review how we celebrate Ramadhan and Aid.
